Aminul Islam Bulbul has been elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Friday after two days of dramatic events.Â
Aminul, former captain of the national team, replaced Faruque Ahmed after the National Sports Council on Thursday terminated Faruque’s nomination for the director category in the BCB.
Aminul was first nominated as the councillor of the BCB, which was confirmed by a letter issued by the NSC dated Thursday. He was then nominated as one of the two directors in the country's sports council’s capacity.Â
On Friday afternoon, the 57-year-old was elected as the 16th president of the BCB in an emergency board meeting held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.Â
Iftekhar Ahmed, one of the directors of the BCB and the chairman of the media committee, said that they acted upon receiving two letters from the NSC.Â
‘One letter was about the change in the councillor, and one was about the removal of the former president, Mr Faruque Ahmed,’ Iftekhar said.Â
Nazmul Abedin Fahim and Fahim Sinha were also elected as the new vice-presidents of the BCB, which was vacant during Faruque’s tenure.Â
Aminul’s incumbency ended Faruque’s nine-month stay in the BCB, which came to the helm after the ousting of the Awami League government last August, as the NSC nominated him and Fahim.
Faruque’s future was shrouded in uncertainty after it was reported that he was asked to resign by the adviser of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiyan.Â
Then, a no-confidence motion was submitted against Faruque, which was signed by eight current directors.Â
In the letter sent to the ministry, accusing Faruque of autocratic leadership, constitutional violations, financial mismanagement, and links to controversial individuals, the directors asked for the immediate removal of him from the BCB.Â
However, Faruque—who had previously served as the national selector— remained adamant that he would not resign, as he claimed that he had not been given any reason to do so.Â
Aminul, after being elected as the new president, said that he was contacted last month by Asif. Though he was not clear at that moment what role he was offered. Â
‘To be very honest, I got a call last April from our National Sports Council. They asked, ‘If we give you an opportunity, will you accept it?’ he said.Â
‘I used to speak often about waiting for that call—and finally, I got it. My only goal from that moment was to honour that call with respect.’
