The Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested nine alleged smugglers and seized 450 bags of cement in an operation near Chheradia at St Martins Island in Cox鈥檚 Bazar on Monday.

Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haq in a press release said that the Coast Guard conducted the operation after receiving intelligence that a gang was preparing to smuggle Yaba, liquor and other narcotics from Myanmar to Bangladesh in exchange for Bangladeshi goods.

Acting on the information, Coast Guard ship Kamruzzaman carried out the operation in the sea area southeast of Cheradia and searched a suspicious fishing trawler and arrested the nine individuals.

Legal action regarding the seized boat, evidence and detained suspects is under way, added the press release.
