A prisoner named Maulana Mansur Alam, 39, passed away at Chattogram Central Jail Saturday night.
Deputy jailer Md Rakib Sheikh of Chattogram Central Jail said Mansur Alam, son of Abdul Majid from Gazunia area of Cox鈥檚 Bazar Sadar thana died at around 1:45am.
Mansur fell sick in the jail on the night and was promptly transferred to the jail hospital. When his condition worsened, he was transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. The attending doctors pronounced him dead after admission.
Jail sources said Mansur Alam was serving a life sentence in a rape case and had been in prison for seven years.
The body will be released to his family once the necessary legal procedures are completed, they added.
