A roundtable discussion titled ‘Advancing Residency Programme of Postgraduate Medical Education in Bangladesh: Bridging Gaps, Building FuturesÕ was held at Bangladesh Medical University on Saturday at BMU’s Shaheed Dr Milton Hall.

The chief guest of this roundtable discussion was Professor Md Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the chief advisor. BMU vice-chancellor Md Shahinul Islam presided over the meeting.


In his speech as chief guest, Professor Sayedur Rahman said that Bangladesh Medical University should lead the country’s health system. Its medical services, medical education and research activities should be conducted to achieve the target.

BMU vice-chancellor Md Shahinul Alam said that today’s academic leaders will take the residency programme forward in line with the advanced knowledge. The current administration of BMU has taken various steps to improve medical services, medical education and research.

Khulna Medical University vice-chancellor Professor Md Ruhul Amin spoke on ‘Management of Residency Programme’, BMU director (IT) Professor AKM Akhtaruzzaman spoke on ‘Residence Programme Evaluation by Residents and Teachers’, Professor Md Sohel Mahmud Arafat, teacher of the Department of Internal Medicine, spoke on ‘Entry Exam for Postgraduate Medical Education’, dean of the Faculty of Surgery, Professor Md Ibrahim Siddique spoke on ‘Training Monitoring and Evaluation’, and former chairman of the Department of Cardiology, Professor Chowdhury Meshkat Ahmed, registrar of BMEAC Professor Md Humayun Kabir Talukder on ‘Assessment of Postgraduate Education’, executive editor of BMU Journal Professor M Mostafa Zaman on ‘Critical Appraisal of Postgraduate Thesis’ and president of BMDC Professor Mohammad Saiful Islam on ‘Challenges and Shaping the Future of Postgraduate Medical Education in Bangladesh’ presented insightful papers.

BMU registrar Professor Md Nazrul Islam moderated the roundtable discussion, and pro-vice chancellor (administration) Professor Md Abul Kalam Azad delivered the welcome address.

Chittagong Medical University vice-chancellor Professor Omar Farooq Yusuf, pro-vice chancellor (research and development) of BMU Professor Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, treasurer Professor Nahrin Akhtar, president of BCPS Professor Mohammad Shahidullah, chairman of the Department of Oncology Professor Syed Md Akram Hossain, former dean of the Faculty of Basic Science and Paraclinical Science Professor Khandaker Manjare Shamim, former chairman of the Department of Pediatric Kidney Professor Golam Mainuddin and many other learned discussants provided their valuable opinions.

BMU deans Professor Md Shamim Ahmed, Professor Md Atiar Rahman, Professor Md Atiqul Haque, Professor M Abu Hena Chowdhury, Sakhawat Hossain, chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine Professor Md Abdus Shakur, chairman of the Neonatal Department Professor Md Abdul Mannan, additional registrar Saif Uddin Nisar Ahmed, assistant professor Md Russell Ahmed, along with chairmen of different departments, teachers and knowledgeable panel experts were present.
