Former Dhaka North City Corporation councillor Murad Hossain died in jail custody on Tuesday.
Murad, 65, was former councillor of DNCC鈥檚 Ward No 12 and president of Mirpur-12 Ward Awami League, activities of which are now banned.
Prison guards brought Murad in an unconscious condition from Kashimpur Prison to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at about 4:30pm, where the duty doctors declared him dead.
Md Faruk, in charge of the police camp at the DMCH, said that the body was kept at the hospital鈥檚 morgue for an autopsy.
According to prison authorities, Murad was accused in three murder cases.
Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Murad on April 9.
According to data from Ain o Salish Kendra, a legal aid and rights organisation, at least 83 under trial and convicted prisoners died in jail custody in the January-October period.
