Arson and crude bomb attacks continued at places in the capital and elsewhere continued on Saturday amid tight security over the verdict against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies have already taken all required preparations to avoid any untoward incident centering the verdict to be announced on Monday against Hasina and her aides.
Incidents of arson and crude bombs attacks have been occurring since November 10 after the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, announced a ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ on social media for Thursday.
The International Crimes Tribunal set November 17 for delivering its verdict in the case over atrocities committed across the country during the July uprising. The Hasina-led AL regime was ousted from power amid the uprising on August 5, 2024.
‘The verdict against Sheikh Hasina and others in crimes against humanity must be announced on November 17. The law enforcement agencies have already completed their necessary preparations so that no unpleasant incident occurs centering on the verdict,’ home adviser retired Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said while replying to a query at an event in Patuakhali.
At least five crude bombs were hurled at four different places in the capital on Saturday while a bus and an establishment were set on fire in Narayanganj and Pirojpur on the day.
No casualties were reported and no arrest was made in these incidents.
In Dhaka, unidentified miscreants exploded two crude bombs beneath the Mirpur-12 Mero Station in Dhaka at about 7:24pm, according the Pallabi Traffic Zone officials.
A crude bomb in the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority area in Mirpur-13 at about 5:00pm, said DMP assistant commissioner for Mirpur zone Mizanur Rahman.
Police are analysing the CCTV footages of the area to identify the miscreants, he said.
After an hour, unidentified miscreants exploded another crude bomb on Madhubagh Bridge in Hatirjheel area at about 6:00pm, said Hatirjheel police station duty officer sub-inspector Moniruzzaman.
Unidentified miscreants threw a crude bomb in front of Mouchak Crossing from Mouchak Flyover at about 4:00pm and fled the scene, according to Sabujbagh Traffic Zone officials.
In Narayanganj, miscreants set a bus on fire on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Shimrail in Siddhirganj upazila of Narayanganj district early Saturday, United News of Bangladesh reported.
Miscreants set the July Memorial on fire near Pirojpur Central Shaheed Minar in Sadar upazila of Pirojpur district at about 2:00am, UNB reported.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested four AL leaders and activists from different places in Dhaka in the last 24 hours till Saturday morning, following recent violent incidents.
