Bangladesh Medical University on Tuesday hosted an international academic session titled ‘Advances in Multiple Myeloma’ as part of its evidence-based clinical oncology lecture series.

Clinical oncology department organised the programme at the BMU Conference Hall, said a press release.

Professor Andrew Robert Branagan, haematologist and medical oncologist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, delivered the keynote lecture.

Speaking as chief guest, BMU treasurer Professor Nahreen Akhtar said cancer cases are rising rapidly in Bangladesh, making genomics, bio-banking, clinical trials, palliative care and nuclear medicine essential for modern treatment. She called for the swift preparation of a full proposal to establish a dedicated cancer research institute at BMU.

The session also highlighted plans for a national-standard ‘BMU Cancer Research Institute,’ featuring molecular and genomic research, a national cancer bio-bank and registry, clinical trial facilities, AI and digital oncology, and an INMAS–BMU nuclear medicine branch.
