Teachers of government primary schools across Bangladesh on Monday continued a countrywide work abstention programme and a sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, for the second consecutive day demanding pay hike.

Earlier on Sunday night they had made an announcement to withdraw their work abstention programme from Monday but vowed to continue their sit-in until their demands were met.

But since Monday morning, they continued their work abstention.

Their three-point demand includes the upgradation of their pay scale to the 10th grade from the 13th grade, ensuring 100 per cent departmental promotion, and resolving issues related to higher-grade eligibility after 10 and 16 years of service.

Earlier, on Saturday, over 100 protesting teachers under the banner of Primary Teachers Demand Implementation Council were injured as the police charged聽 batons, hurled sound grenades and sprayed water on their procession in the capital鈥檚 Shahbagh area.

Protesting at the police attack, the agitating teachers announced countrywide work abstention programme and sit-in in the capital for an indefinite period from Sunday.

Teachers at different government primary schools across the capital were seen observing the strike on Monday.

Since Monday morning, assistant teachers of government primary schools started to gather on the Central Shaheed Minar premises and by afternoon several thousand teachers gathered there.

They had vowed to continue the movement until their demands were met.
