The tennis court built for the teachers and officials of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has remained unused for a long time as no one goes there to play.

Campus sources said that the court now has turned into an abandoned place filled with weeds.

The tennis court was built on a hillock adjacent to the university club on the campus at a cost of Tk 50.1 Lakh and was inaugurated in October 2022.

‘But the court became unfit for play within a few days of its inauguration allegedly because of using sub-standard materials in the construction of the court,’ an official said, adding that the then vice-chancellor professor Farid Uddin Ahmed also had admitted the allegation.

He said that the administration also had taken a quick initiative to renovate the tennis court under which new safety nets were also installed.

‘But, the teachers and officials of the university do not go to play there,’ he commented on Thursday.

Talking to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, the university students said that grasses and mosses have grown on the court, net inside the court has been torn and branches of the surrounding trees have entered into the area since it was not being used for long time.

Stating that there is no indoor sports facility for students on the campus, the students claimed that many of them are compelled to go outside the campus to attend indoor sports, which is time-consuming and expensive for them.

They said that they want the abandoned tennis court to be turned into an indoor sports complex for students after renovating it.

Public administration student Faisal Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they have been demanding for installing an indoor sports complex on the campus for long but the administration did not take any initiative so far in this regard.

Pro-VC professor Md Sajedul Karim said the tennis court is being looked after by the university club.

‘If the club plans for renovation or thinks it would be transformed into an indoor one, then the university administration would work with it,’ he said, adding that he would talk to the university club authorities about why the tennis court remained unused.
