At least nine people, including three motorcyclists, were killed and seven others injured in road accidents in Rajshahi, Bagerhat, Brahmanbaria and Sirajganj districts on Friday.
NewAge staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that at least three youths were killed when their motorcycle collided head-on with a truck on Charghat-Lalpur highway in Shibpur area in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi.
The deceased were Mohammad Ali Tuhin, 25, Maruf Islam Joy, 18, and Md Shimul, 25,
Charghat Model Police officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said that Tuhin and Maruf were from Chamta village while Shimul from Shibpur area.
Witnesses said that the three friends were heading to Charghat on the motorbike from Baneswar area.
The accident happened when they attempted to overtake an ambulance near a petrol pump at Shibpur at about 5:45pm that resulted in a head-on collision with a truck coming from opposite direction, leaving the three dead on the spot.聽
The officer-in-charge said that the bodies were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that in Bagerhat two people were killed and seven others injured when a bus after collision with more than one motorbikes turned turtle and fell into a roadside ditch in Tetulia Bridge area on the Mongla-Khulna highway.
The identities of the victims could not be confirmed immediately.
Mongla EPZ Fire Station senior station officer Md Emran Hossain said that the accident occurred when the bus, coming from Mongla, collided head-on with a couple of motorcycles and flipped onto its side as it tried to stop.
The bus then rolled into a roadside ditch, killing two passengers on the spot.聽
The seven injured passengers were rushed to Jhonjhonia Hospital nearby.
All the motorbike riders involved in the crash are believed to be tourists heading to Sundarban.
United News of Bangladesh reported that in Brahmanbaria, an auto-rickshaw driver was killed in a head-on collision with a truck in Sarail upazila.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
The accident occurred around 6:15am in front of Baddapara Alia Madrassah on Sarail-Nasirnagar regional road.
Sarail Police officer-in-charge Md Morshedul Alam Chowdhury said that a Sylhet-bound truck carrying fish collided with an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction, leaving the auto-rickshaw driver dead on the spot.
The accident might have occurred due to an early morning dense fog, the police officer added.
The truck and its driver were taken into custody and legal action would be taken, he said.
BSS reported that in Sirajganj, two motorcyclists were killed in a head-on collision with a truck at Raiganj upazila.
The accident occurred around 3:30pm at the Ghurka Nahar Agro crossing in the upazila.
The deceased were identified as Omar Faruk, 32, son of Biru Sheikh, and Faridul Islam, 30, son of Akbar Ali, both residents of Dumrai village in Chandai Kona union under Raiganj upazila.
According to eyewitnesses and the police, the accident occurred when the two men were heading towards Salanga on a motorcycle to join the campaign of national election aspirant Ainul Haque.
On the way, their motorcycle collided head-on with an oncoming goods-laden truck which was caught by angry locals following the accident.
Hatikumrul Highway Police officer-in-charge Ismail Hossain said that legal procedures were under way.
