THE authorities of Islamic University in Kushtia on Wednesday suspended three students from the university for two semesters and issued formal warnings to nine others for their involvement in the assault and harassment of journalists during a campus football match.

A press release, signed by IU acting registrar Professor M Manjurul Haque, was issued in this regard on Wednesday night.

According to the press release, the decision of suspending the students for two academic sessions was approved at the university’s 271st syndicate meeting held on the campus on October 30.

The suspended students are Nahid Hasan, Riaz Morshed, and Afsana Parvin Tina of Economics department under 2020–22 academic session of the university. All three have been barred from academic activities, including classes, examinations, and campus events, for two consecutive semesters.

The nine students warned for limited involvement are Saiful Islam, Milton Mia, Moshiur Rahman, Rakib Hossain, Sourav Dutta, Minhajul Abedin, Sabbir Hossain, Sourav Hossain Sajib, and Faridul Alam Panna. They have been formally cautioned against any future misconduct and urged to uphold institutional discipline.

On July 12, students from various academic years of the Economics department clashed with journalists, resulting in physical attacks and false complaints filed with the proctor.

The university administration, taking the issue in consideration, formed a five-member investigation committee headed by Pharmacy department Professor Mohammad Mizanur Rahman on July 14.

The university emphasized that all involved parties were warned to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future.

In the office order, the university administration strongly condemned the attack, emphasising that such acts are incompatible with academic values and Islamic principles of justice and integrity.

The committee conducted interviews with witnesses, reviewed digital evidence, and examined procedural violations before submitting its report to the vice-chancellor’s office.

The recommendations were subsequently approved, leading to the current disciplinary actions.
