A sweeping eviction drive cleared more than a hundred illegal shops, makeshift structures and hawkers that had mushroomed around the Joydevpur rail crossing in Gazipur on Thursday.
This drive was conducted jointly by Gazipur City Corporation, the district administration, Metropolitan Police, and Bangladesh Railway.
Md Sohel Hasan, chief executive officer of Gazipur City Corporation, said that Joydevpur served as a vital gateway where thousands of people moved daily, yet years of encroachment had crippled mobility.
‘Today’s operation is not just an eviction, it marks a coordinated push to restore discipline and protect public space,’ he said.
He added that work had begun under the Joydebpur Mobility Improvement Project, which included a planned flyover, expanded feeder roads, automated traffic signals and upgraded footpaths to modernise the area.
The eviction drive finally brought a visible relief to Gazipur residents who had long endured severe congestion and disorder in the area.
Sarfuddin Ahmed, Gazipur City Corporation administrator and Dhaka divisional commissioner said that keeping roads and footpaths free is now a top priority, while executive magistrate Faria Tasnim reiterated that anti-encroachment drives will continue.
Floating vendors affected by the eviction urged authorities to arrange rehabilitation so they can continue earning a livelihood.
The officials assured that their situation would be considered with both legality and humanity in mind.
