The Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested a man who posing as ‘General Akbar’ allegedly defrauded job seekers by offering unethical ‘assistance’ and ‘lobbying’ in the commission’s ongoing constable recruitment process.
He had contacted ACC senior officials through mobile and WhatsApp and allegedly unethically lobbied for the jobs.
A team of the anti-graft agency arrested him from his residence in the capital’s Mirpur at about 4:30pm on Tuesday, said ACC director general Akhtar Hossain at a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters on Wednesday.
Using digital surveillance, ACC officials later identified the man as Maftul Hossain, who hails from Randunimura area in Chandpur. He was living at a rented flat at Rowshan Manzil at West Kazipara in the capital’s Mirpur.
Retired Major General Fazle Elahi Akbar is the security adviser to Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, also a former prime minister.
During the raid, the ACC team seized four mobile phones, two SIM cards, an undated Dutch-Bangla Bank cheque for Tk 6 lakh, and admit cards of two candidates of the constable recruitment.
He also sent admit cards of two candidates and attempted to exert unethical influence in exchange for money, said the ACC official.
Maftul used his fake identity to extort money from job seekers. He took a signed cheque for Tk 6 lakh from some Shariful Islam and another cheque for Tk 3 lakh from some Jewel Hossain, claiming that he could secure their jobs in the ACC constable recruitment process, the official said.
The anti-graft agency also revealed that Maftul had previously lobbied under the same fake identity at other government offices, including the liberation war affairs ministry and the national identity wing.
He served as an office assistant-cum-computer typist at the Department of Immigration and Passports, but was later dismissed due to multiple allegations.
Akhtar said that more individuals might be involved in the scam.
