Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami amir Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday said that his party was not interested in forming any electoral alliance for the forthcoming general election.

The Jamaat chief said that they would rather opt for an electoral understanding.

Shafiqur made the remarks as he spoke to journalists on arriving at the Sylhet airport from Dhaka in the morning.

He said that not only Islamic parties but also patriotic and committed political parties were joining in the electoral understanding. ‘Many more parties will join in the future.’

He said that Jamaat had cleared its position on holding a referendum on the July Charter.

‘If the referendum is not held before the elections, what will be the basis of the national election?’ he asked.

‘So we want the referendum first. The July Charter should be given a legal basis,’ he said.

‘We think that our proposal for holding the election under a PR system is the best demand. We hope that people will consider it. We will do everything by taking people with us. We will do nothing against the will of the people,’ he said.

The Jammat leader also said that they, like everyone, wanted the election in February. ‘If the election is delayed, different kinds of chaos can be created,’ he added.

Mentioning that Jamaat is for holding the polls by taking everyone, a reporter questioned whether ‘everyone’ meant ‘parties including the Awami League’.

Shafiq responded that the Awami League itself did not want elections.

Shafiq came to Sylhet on a two-day maiden tour after he was elected the amir of his party for the third consecutive time.

Leaders of the party’s district and metropolitan units were present at the airport to receive the Jamaat amir.Â
