Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate for the Chattogram-8 constituency, Ershad Ullah, was shot and injured during an attack by unidentified assailants while campaigning in the port city on Wednesday evening.
Two others, identified as Sarwar Hossain Babla and BNP activist Shanto, were also injured in the incident.
Later, all three were rushed to Evercare Hospital.
Sarwar, 40, succumbed to his injuries, according to Jasim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Bayezid Bostami police station.
The police have not confirmed whether the deceased was affiliated with the BNP.
The attack took place around 6:00 pm in the Hajipara area, under the jurisdiction of Bayezid Bostami police station.
‘Ershad Ullah was attacked while campaigning. He sustained a bullet injury to his leg but is out of danger and receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital. Another person was also shot. Police are on the scene, and an investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest those involved,’ said Amirul Islam, deputy commissioner (north) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
According to Kazi Belal, joint convener of Chattogram city BNP, Ershad Ullah had attended a campaign meeting at Ward No 3 and later visited a nearby mosque for Maghrib prayers.
As he was leaving the mosque, armed attackers reportedly opened fire on him.
Ershad Ullah was officially nominated by BNP for the Chattogram-8 (Boalkhali–Chandgaon) constituency for the upcoming national election, following the party’s announcement of candidates on 3 November by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
