A youth was killed and more than 10 others were injured in a clash over a land dispute between two groups of villagers at Goainghat upazila in Sylhet on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, Mohammad Ali alias Al Amin, 30, was son of Mostafa Miah of Aharkandi village at Pashchim Jaflong union under the Goainghat upazila, police said.
Local residents said that there was a longstanding enmity between Mostafa Miah and Nur Hossain of the Aharkandi village following the ownership of a disputed land adjacent to the village Market.
As a consequence of the enmity, family members, relatives and supporters of both of the rival groups locked in a clash at about 9:00am and at one point Al Amin sustained a serious blow of a sharp weapon, they said.
Goainghat police station officer-in-charge Tariqul Islam Talukder told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Al Amin was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital after rescuing him from the spot in a critical condition.
‘But the attending doctors declared him dead on arrival to the hospital’s emergency department,’ he said, adding that other injured were given treatment from local dispensaries.
He said that in the afternoon two people were also arrested from the spot for their involvement in the clash and further legal steps in this regard were underway.
