Indian nationals shot dead a Bangladeshi youth in Kanaighat border area in Sylhet on Sunday afternoon.
Deceased Shakil Ahmed, 25, son of Abdur Rauf, was from Pattichhara village in Dona area under the Kanaighat upazila, said the Border Guard Bangladesh.
Local resident told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Shakil along with four other youths crossed into the Indian territory through the Dona border at around 4:00pm to bring betel nuts.
At that time men from the Khasi community opened fire on the youths, leaving Shakil critically injured, they said.
Local people said that Shakil’s companions brought him back to the Bangladesh territory after which he died on the way to Kanaighat Upazila Health Complex.
BGB 19 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Zubair Anowar confirmed Shakil’s death to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
Differing with the local people’s account over the time of Shakil’s death, however, Colonel Zubair said that he died around 500 metres inside the Indian territory after being shot at by the Khasi men.
‘Preparation is under way to make a complaint to the Indian border security force authorities in this connection,’ he said in the evening.
Kanaighat police officer-in-charge Abdul Awal told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the evening that they were informed by the BGB of Shakil’s killing by the Indian nationals.
‘The victim’s body has been kept in the mortuary of Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital,’ he said, adding that no complaint was filed so far with the police station in this regard.
