The police intercepted a march by graduates with disabilities at the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka on Friday afternoon as they made their way towards the official residence of the Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to demand employment rights.
The group, calling themselves the Chakri Protyashi Protibondhi Graduate Parishad, gathered at the TSC area before starting their march towards Jamuna, passing through Shahbagh.
They were protesting to press their five-point demands. The demands included employment opportunities categorised by disability type, offered every two years through special circulars; a two-percent quota for disabled candidates in first and second-class government positions; a five-per cent quota for disabled candidates in third and fourth-class positions and permission for visually impaired and physically disabled candidates to nominate their own scribes for exams.
At around 4:00pm, the protesters reached the Shahbagh intersection, where the police intercepted them.
In response, the protesters blocked the road, disrupting traffic in the area.
Shahbagh police station鈥檚 officer-in-charge, Khalid Mansoor, told 抖阴精品 that a group of 20 to 25 disabled protesters blocked the road for approximately 45 minutes.
The police eventually dispersed the crowd without using force.
Mansoor added that the protesters later moved to the side of the road, allowing traffic to resume as normal by the evening.
