
A Dhaka court on Thursday placed three associates of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury on remand for a total of 10 days in two graft cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order after the ACC produced the three before the court and sought a seven-day remand in each case.
After hearing, the court placed them on a five-day remand in each case for interrogation.
The three accused are Aramit PLC assistant general managers Md Abdul Aziz, Mohammad Jahangir Alam and Utpal Paul.
According to the case documents, Saifuzzaman allegedly embezzled money from different banks and financial institutions through the accused and laundered the fund abroad.
The cases were filed in September.
On September 28, ACC deputy assistant director Md Rubel Hossain filed a case against eight people, including Saifuzzaman, on charges of embezzling Tk 41.75 crore from the Mohakhali branch of United Commercial Bank PLC.
On September 18, ACC deputy assistant director Md Sajib Ahmed filed a case against eight people, including Saifuzzaman and his wife Rukhmila Zaman, on charges of taking Tk 52 crore in bribe.
Saifuzzaman served as state minister for land from 2014 to 2018 and as land minister from 2019 to 2023 during the Awami League regime which was ousted on August 5, 2024, in a mass uprising.
Just before a few days before the fall of Awami League government, Saifuzzaman along with his wife and other family members left for London.
Several other cases were also filed against Saifuzzaman and his wife over alleged corruption.
