A group of Bangladesh Nationalist Party activists on Thursday locked the Chandar Union Council office in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi after driving the council chair out of the office over the appointment of a Union Digital Centre entrepreneur.
The victim, Mizanur Rahman, the panel-1 chairman of the union council, lodged a complaint with the Tanore upazila nirbahi officer, seeking legal action against the perpetrators.
Mizanur told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he, in the absence of the elected chairman, was given administrative and financial authority by the district administration on October 15 and had been attending office regularly since then.
He said that two factions of the local BNP demanded the appointment of their preferred persons at the parishad’s digital centre.
‘After consulting with the UNO and on the recommendations of union BNP president Azad Ali and general secretary Sajjad Ali, we allowed Md Sakil to sit at the digital centre as an unofficial entrepreneur on Wednesday,’ he said.
He alleged that BNP activists Rimon Ali, son of former chairman Mofiz Uddin, and Sharif Uddin, along with 15–20 others, entered the parishad office around 10:00am on Thursday, drove him out of his room and locked it.
Union BNP president Azad Ali said that Rimon, who held no party post, had been obstructing the regular activities of the union council using muscle power.
‘We urged the administration to take immediate legal action to restore the council’s regular activities,’ he said.
BNP activist Rimon Ali could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts over the phone.
Tanre upazilla nirbahi officer Naima Khan, however, avoided commenting on the matter.
