A Chinese man was stabbed by muggers in Chattogram city on Tuesday noon.
The incident took place at around 12:30pm in front of the Bandar Officers Colony gate under the Bandar police station, said the police.
Local people caught two of the suspected muggers after the incident and handed them over to the police after giving them a beating.
The Chattogram Metropolitan Police Bandar Zone assistant commissioner of police Mahmudul Hasan said that the victim, aged around 45, could only speak Chinese.
‘We could not yet confirm why he came to Bangladesh or whether he is involved in any profession or institution here. We are trying to gather information with the help of a professional interpreter,’ said the ASP.
Chittagong Port Authority secretary Omar Faruk said that the Chinese man was walking along the main road when three muggers stopped him and tried to snatch his mobile phone and money.
As he resisted, the muggers stabbed him amid a scuffle. Locals managed to catch one of them red-handed and beat him up before handing him over to the police.
Another mugger, who was injured during the incident, tried to flee. The Chinese national chased him, and local people caught the second mugger near the CPA jetty gate and beat him up before the police arrived, Omar Faruk added.
The police later took the injured Chinese to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital by an ambulance. The two injured muggers were also sent to the same hospital.
‘There was a rumour that the Chinese national was stabbed inside the port area, but the incident actually happened on a road outside the restricted port zone,’ Omar Faruk added.
Assistant commissioner Mahmudul Hasan said that the Chinese national was stabbed below the knee, but his injury was not severe. He received primary medical care and has been released.
He is now under police custody, said Hasan.
Among the arrested muggers, one was identified as Akash, who was in a critical condition and undergoing treatment, while another named Sajjad was given first aid and later handed over to the police.
The police official added that a case would be filed after confirming the identity of the Chinese national.
