Rapid Action Battalion members have arrested two suspected members of a robbery gang in separate drives in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, and recovered local weapons and cash from their possession, officials said on Thursday.
Squadron Leader Nazmul Islam, company commander of RAB-4, confirmed the arrests, saying that the operations were conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in the Bhadhail area of Ashulia.
The detainees were identified as Moinul Islam, the alleged ringleader of the gang, and his associate Russell Mia.
RAB said that another gang member had earlier been detained on October 9 while attempting a robbery by blocking a road with a tree trunk in the same area.
Interrogation of that suspect revealed that the gang, led by Moinul Islam, had gathered at the scene to commit robbery, prompting Ashulia police to file a case.
Following the incident, RAB-4 launched a shadow investigation and tracked the suspects using intelligence and digital surveillance.
From Russell’s possession, RAB recovered Tk 6.74 lakh in cash, three live bullets, a Chinese axe, a machete, two switchblades, and five mobile phones.
Nazmul Islam said that initial questioning suggested that the suspects were involved in multiple robbery incidents and other criminal activities in Dhaka and nearby areas.
The arrested men have been handed over to the local police for further legal action, he added.
