
Five children drowned in three districts in the country on Saturday.
They drowned in Magura, Kishoreganj and Thakurgaon, reported Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
Three children drowned in a canal while bathing at Chapatla village under Mohammadpur in Magura.
The deceased were Tanha, daughter of Tariqul Islam; Tarin, daughter of Anarul Islam; and Cynthia, daughter of Sajjad Hossain, all from the same village. The girls, aged 8 to 9, were cousins.
The accident occurred around 1:00pm when the three children went to the canal to bathe near their house.
When they did not return home after an hour, family members began searching. Later, people of the area recovered their bodies from the canal.
They were taken to Mohammadpur upazila health complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.
Officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur police Abdur Rahman said that it was being verified whether the deaths of the three children at the same time were accidental.
In Kishoreganj, an 11-year-old girl, Sawda, daughter of Ashab Uddin, drowned in a canal at Shaitdhar village under Nikli in the district.
Ashab went fishing in the haor area with his two daughters, Sawda and Taslima, 7. While returning home, the sisters slipped and fell into a canal near their house.
The father immediately jumped into the water and managed to rescue the younger daughter, Taslima, but failed to save Sawda despite efforts.
Later, people of the area recovered Sawda鈥檚 body from the canal.
In Thakurgaon, a minor boy, Aiman, 9, son of Arif Hossain of Kaharpara village under sadar upazila, drowned in a pond at sadar upazila parishad.
The boy drowned in the pond while learning to swim, said Thakurgaon Sadar police OC Sarwar Alam.
A two-month swimming training was being held at the Thakurgaon Sadar upazila parishad pond.
Aiman, who came to learn swimming on Saturday morning, entered the pond with his classmates. At one stage, he drowned in the pond.
Later, he was rescued from the pond and taken to the hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
