The National Citizen Party on Saturday urged the government to bring the members of the military, police, Rapid Action Battalion, and Border Guard Bangladesh, who acted against the interests of the people during the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime, to book.

The party member secretary, Akhtar Hossain, made the demand while speaking to Journalists at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Square adjacent to Begum Rokeya University Rangpur.

He alleged that a section in law enforcement and intelligence agencies was involved in enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and other forms of political repression during the AL regime.

‘Fascism gripped the country for a long time,’ he said, and added, ‘We have witnessed heinous crimes like enforced disappearances targeting those who criticised the government. Many of them were taken to secret detention centers and subjected to torture.’

‘Those who were involved in such actions worked not for the people but to meet the agenda of a regime that robbed the democracy of the country. They have tarnished the dignity and image of the forces.’

He claimed that senior officials from the military, DGFI, RAB, and other agencies were involved in the incidents, and that International Crimes Tribunals had issued arrest warrants against some of them.

‘We demand the arrest and trial of those generals, DGFI and RAB officers, and others responsible for abductions, killings, and illegal detentions,’ he added.

Referring to the elections held in 2014, 2018, and 2024, Akhtar alleged that the then ruling party systematically stripped citizens of their voting rights through fraudulent and one-sided polls.

‘Time has come for the people to reclaim their democratic rights through a participatory and fair election,’ he said.

Commenting on the upcoming election under the interim government, he said, ‘If issues like the July Charter are resolved, and law enforcement agencies are reformed to ensure a level playing field, a participatory and credible election is possible in the country.’

Earlier in the day, Akhtar visited the grave of the late district BNP secretary Anisur Rahman Laku in Noorpur and offered condolences to his family.
