The government wants to make madrassah education relevant, practical and modern, the interim government’s adviser to the education ministry Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar said on Wednesday.

While attending a ceremony to celebrate the 246th founding anniversary of the Government Madrasah-e-Alia, Dhaka, he also said that earlier the tradition of the madrassah education combined theology with logic, astronomy and scientific practice.


‘We want to resurrect this tradition and create a form of religious education integrated with modern science and technology,’ he said.

The adviser joined the ceremony as chief guest, said a press release issued by the ministry on the day.

Professor Abrar said that madrassah education was an important part of the country’s education system.

‘Religious education must remain the centrepiece of madrassah education, while elements of modern education must be included to increase the performance of the students,’ he said.

He also mentioned that more than one projects had been taken by the ministry in this regard.

‘We will be able to contribute to the country and the society as developed and skilled citizens by embracing science and technology with religious beliefs,’ the adviser said. 

Congratulating the Government Madrasah-e-Alia on its 246th founding anniversary, he gave assurance to solve the problems, including crisis of teachers, drinking water and transport facilities, infrastructural limitations and residential problems of the students soon. 

Madrassah principal Professor Mohammad Obaidul Hoque chaired the ceremony while the adviser to the religious affairs ministry AFM Khalid Hossain and Technical and Madrassah Education Division secretary Muhammad Rafiqul Islam,  among others, attended the occasion.

Government Madrasah-e-Alia, Dhaka, which is one of the three government alia madrassahs in the country, was established in 1780.
