A local leader of Juba Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was shot dead, and at least 10 others were injured during a clash between the BNP and Awami League activists in Alokbali union under Narsingdi Sadar on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Sadek Mia, 42, son of Roop Mia from Muradnagar village in Alokbali Union. He served as the joint convener of the local unit of Juba Dal.


According to local sources and police, tension had been mounting between supporters of the BNP and the Awami League, activities of which are banned, over control of the Alokbali char area, a disputed region in Sadar upazila.

Residents had reportedly been fearing a major outbreak of violence in recent days.

At least 10 people from both groups sustained injuries during the clash, some of them reportedly from gunfire.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Narsingdi, Kalim Ullah, confirmed the death.

He said that one person was killed in a shootout by miscreants in the char area of Alokbali.

He added that the situation is currently under control, but additional police personnel have been deployed to prevent further violence.
