Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court on Thursday ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission to request Interpol red notices against S Alam Group chairman Mohammad Saiful Alam and his two brothers in a loan fraud case.
Judge Md Sabbir Foyez passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The two brothers are Abdus Samad, vice-chairman of S Alam Group, and Mohammad Abdullah Hasan, a director of the conglomerate.
ACC鈥檚 public relations officer Aktarul Islam said that the court issued the order following a petition filed by the case鈥檚 investigation officer and ACC deputy director Tahasin Munabil Haque on September 16.
According to the petition, ACC had made several attempts to arrest the accused, but later learned that they had fled Bangladesh.
The ACC, therefore, sought the court order to seek Interpol鈥檚 assistance through the Ministry of Home Affairs to execute arrest warrants against Saiful Alam, Abdus Samad, and Abdullah Hasan.
The case was filed on July 2 with ACC integrated district office in Dhaka 1, accusing the trio of embezzling Tk 104.20 crore borrowed from Reliance Finance Limited (now Aviva Finance Limited) under shell company name of Messrs AM Trading.
The funds were allegedly laundered through several bank accounts before being transferred to S Alam Super Edible Oil Limited.
Saiful Alam, widely regarded as a close associate of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, rose to prominence after taking control of Islami Bank in 2017.
Since then, his Chattogram-based business empire, S Alam Group, reportedly gained control of eight banks and withdrew over Tk聽1 trillion in loans under various names, sparking widespread allegations of financial irregularities.
After the fall of Awami League government on August 5, 2024, ACC started inquiry against the businesses group over allegations of corruption.
