
An alleged extortionist was lynched and beaten to death at Jamira Bazar and a local BNP leader committed suicide after being assaulted in Phultala area under Paikgachha in Khulna on Saturday.
The deceased were Alam Ali Molla, 40, a resident of Tolna village under Phultala, and Mosharraf Hossain, 44, a former ward-level BNP president in Paikgacha Paurasabha.
The police said that businessmen of Phultala Bazar became united at around 3:00pm and lynched Alam in the bazar on charges of demanding extortion from Humayun Kabir Molla, general secretary of Jamira Bazar Banik Samity, after detaining him from his residence.
They also claimed that five to six masked men equipped with local arms and sharp weapons went to the residence of Humayun Kabir Molla at Tolna village recently and demanded extortion and threatened dire consequences, saying that he would be killed if their demand was not met.
Officer-in-charge of Phultala police Md Zellal Hossain said that on information, members of law enforcement agencies went to the spot and recovered the body of Alam.
‘The body was sent to Khulna Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy,’ the OC said, adding that the police had started an investigation to unravel the matter.
Meanwhile, Mosharraf Hossain committed suicide after reportedly being assaulted by his rivals of the party.
He consumed poison out of anger and frustration, party sources said.
Khulna district BNP convener Moniruzzaman Montu claimed that he had taken poison due to personal mental distresses.
 Mosharraf died at around 3:00pm today while undergoing treatment at Gazi Medical College Hospital in Khulna city.
His sudden death has cast a pall of grief over the local BNP.
