The Dhaka University Journalists’ Association celebrated its 40th founding anniversary at the teachers’ lounge of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union cafeteria on Friday.

With the slogan ‘in information, in youth, in truth’, DU pro-vice-chancellor, administration, Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha attended as chief guest at the event.

Earlier, a discussion was held with the participation of DU teachers, administrators, former and current DUJA members.

Campus journalists not only work as information providers but also play a bridging role between students and the administration, said speakers.

Professor Sayema Haque said, ‘It is never easy to deliver objective reporting beyond debates, but university journalists are doing it with efficiency. Their reports reflect both irregularities and positive activities on the campus.’

Newly elected DUCSU vice-president Abu Shadiq Kayem said, ‘In times of fascist repression, DUJA members stood beside students. During the July uprising, they played a crucial role and carried the nine-point demands to the media.’

DU proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, ‘Campus journalists point out our mistakes, give advice and show us the way through criticism.’

DUJA Founding member Khairuzzaman Kamal recalled memories of the association’s early struggles and challenges at the programme.

DUJA president Mohiuddin Mujahid Mahi said, ‘We have faced many challenges along the way, but those could not shake our commitment. We believe that objective and courageous journalism will continue to guide both the university and the society.’

Following the discussion and cake-cutting ceremony, a rally was brought out from the DUCSU premises to the faculty of arts building.

Founded on September 19, 1985, DUJA has been upholding professionalism and objectivity in campus journalism for four decades.Â
