The Bangladesh Nationalist Party condemned the attack and arson at the Jatiya Party’s central office in Kakrail in the capital on Friday night.

In a statement, signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party expressed deep concern over the incident.

The BNP said that such an attack, particularly in the aftermath of the July mass uprising, would only create confusion and frustration among the people aspiring to see the establishment of a democratic state and society.

‘These actions clearly contradict democratic principles and the spirit of the July movement,’ the statement read.

‘Differences of opinion may exist, but obstructing freedom of expression through the use of force reflects a despotic mindset and we express our deep concern and strongly condemn the attack and vandalism carried out by unruly elements at the Jatiya Party’s central office,’ it added.

The BNP also stressed that the existence of multiple political parties is fundamental to democracy, and whether a party continues its organisational activities or remains viable should be determined solely by the people.

‘Attempts to silence a political party through threats, attacks, or violence are completely inconsistent with the universally accepted principles of multiparty democracy,’ the statement further said.

The central office of the Jatiya Party at Kakrail in the capital on Friday evening again came under attack by some unidentified people who vandalised and set the office afire.

Witnesses said that some political activists attending a solidarity rally at Shahbagh protesting against the attack on Gono Odhiker Parishad president Nurul Haque Nur took part in the attack.
