Several hundred local residents blocked the Dhaka-Barishal and Dhaka-Khulna highways on Friday afternoon, protesting at the Election Commission鈥檚 decision to shift two unions from Bhanga upazila to Nagarkanda upazila in Faridpur.

The protesters blocked Bhanga Golchattar, the entry point of the two highways at around 4:00pm, halting vehicular movement.

Persuaded by the local administration, they eventually ended the blockade at about 6:30pm.

Confirming the incident, Bhanga upazila nirbahi officer Md Mizanur Rahman told 抖阴精品 that vehicle movement on the two highways remained suspended due to the demonstration till their withdrawal.

Earlier in the day, demonstrators barricaded the Bhanga-Faridpur and Bhanga-Khulna highways with logs and burning tyres at around 8:00am, causing a long queue of vehicles.

The UNO said that the protesters lifted those blockades around 12:00 noon after he assured them that a memorandum would be sent to the Election Commission with request for keeping Algi and Hamirdi unions under Bhanga upazila.

On Thursday, the Election Commission published the revised boundaries of 300 parliamentary constituencies ahead of the 13th national parliamentary elections.

As per the new demarcation, Algi and Hamirdi unions of Bhanga upazila, previously part of Faridpur-4 constituency, have been transferred to Faridpur-2, which covers Nagarkanda and Salta upazilas.
