The Anti-Corruption Commission has sent two letters to the Police Headquarters requesting steps to issue red notices through Interpol against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in connection with two cases filed against them over graft in the allotment of government plots in the Purbachal new town project.

Investigating officers of two cases filed against Hasina and Sajeeb Wazed sent the letter to the Inspector General of Police on Wednesday seeking steps for issuing a red notice against them, said ACC deputy director for public relations Akhtarul Islam on Thursday.

The letter stated that ‘During the investigation, it was found that accused Sheikh Hasina is currently staying abroad. In the interest of justice, the honourable court has issued an arrest warrant to locate her and bring her back to face the law.’

‘In this situation, the honourable court’s order, arrest warrant, copy of the First Information Report, copy of the charge sheet, and the completed red notice form are enclosed herewith for necessary action,’ said the letters.

A similar letter was sent regarding Sajeeb. The letter also included the names, NID numbers, parents’ names, passport numbers, and addresses of both Hasina and Sajeeb.

Sheikh Hasina has been staying in India since being ousted from power on August 5, 2024, amid a student-led mass uprising. Her son Sajeeb has long been residing in the United States. Other members of their family are also abroad.

The ACC launched an inquiry in December into allegations of irregularities and corruption in the allotment of six plots—each 10 kathas—in the Purbachal New Town Project in the names of Hasina, Sajeeb and other family members.

In January, six cases were filed alleging ‘abuse of power and irregularities’ in the allotments of the RAJUK plots.

Alongside Sheikh Hasina and Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the accused in these cases include Hasina’s daughter Saima Wazed Putul, her sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana’s son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, and daughters Tulip Rizwana Siddiq and Azminee Siddiq Ruponti.

Sheikh Hasina has been made an accused in all six cases. Some of the others have also been charged in multiple cases. In total, there are 29 accused in the six cases.

According to the case, while in the highest office of government as prime minister, Sheikh Hasina and her family abused their power. Despite being ineligible, they obtained 10-katha plots in Sector 27 of the Purbachal housing project.

On July 31, Dhaka’s two special judge courts framed charges and ordered trial proceedings to begin against Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, their children, and others—27 accused in total—in the six Purbachal land plot corruption cases.
