
All factories in the Uttara Export Processing Zone in Nilphamari remained closed and a tense situation was prevailing in the area on Wednesday, a day after a worker was killed during a clash between the law enforcers and the workers protesting against the closure of a factory and lay-offs.
Nilphamari superintendent of police AFM Tariq Hossain Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that all factories in the EPZ remained closed after the clash.
No case was filed regarding the incident till Wednesday evening.
‘Police are preparing to file a case over the incident,’ said the superintendent of police.
On Tuesday, Habib Islam, a worker of a knitting factory Ecu International, was killed and 25 others were injured as law enforcers allegedly opened fire on workers during a clash between the law enforcers and the protesting workers.
The clash sparked during a demonstration by workers of Evergreen Factory on Tuesday morning in the EPZ area, where about 32,000 workers are employed in some 26 factories. A Hong Kong national is the owner of Evergreen Factory.
Meanwhile, fear and tension gripped the local people and factory workers in Nilphamari’s EPZ following Tuesday’s incident.
Local resident Azimul Islam said, ‘The situation here has remained tense after the incident. However, the army and police are deployed in the area. We want these problems be resolved as soon as possible and the EPZ reopen soon.’
Police said that unrests had been continuing since Evergreen Factory laid off 51 workers.
Evergreen Company workers began their protests on Saturday with 23-point demand, and the protests have gradually spread to workers in the other factories.
Uttara EPZ security chief Ashraful Islam said that they were expecting a decision about the reopening of the factories from a meeting in a day or two.
Meanwhile, various political parties have issued statements, protesting against the worker killing.
The National Citizens Party at a press conference said that no false and harassment cases must not be filed against the workers over the movement.
In the capital Dhaka, leaders of the Left Democratic Alliance from a protest rally called on the interim government to take immediate actions against the killers of the garment worker in Nilphamari on Tuesday.
The LDA organised the rally in front of the National Press Club where its coordinator Ruhin Hossain Prince, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, said that the government must take responsibility for the killing of the garment worker.  Â
