A mobile court on Monday disconnected electricity connections to three dyeing factories at Tamai in Belkuchi upazilla in Sirajganj that had been operating without clearance from the Department of Environment.

A mobile court, led by upazila nirbahi officer and executive magistrate Afrin Jahan, conducted the drive with assistance from Rural Electrification Board officials to cut the power supply lines of Mohabbat Dyeing at Tamai Bazar, Anwar/Bangladesh Dyeing at Tamai Royna Para, and Nur Islam Dyeing at Kaliapara.

Officials from the DoE, police, and fire service were also present at the scene.

Residents alleged that hundreds of such dyeing factories had been running illegally in Belkuchi for years without DoE clearance.

They claimed that many factory owners ‘managed’ DoE officials to continue operations, raising questions about how these factories obtained electricity connections without proper approval.

Md Tuhin Alam, assistant director at the Sirajganj DoE, said, ‘These dyeing mills were operating illegally without clearance. Based on recent reports, a mobile court was conducted, and power lines were disconnected. Similar action was taken earlier against six other establishments. We are now gathering information about more factories in the area.’

UNO Afrin Jahan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· over phone, ‘There are many factories in Belkuchi operating without environmental clearance. Following directives, we disconnected power to three factories where irregularities were found. They were using household electricity connections for commercial purposes.’
