The police have detained two physicians over allegations of wrong treatment following the death of a six-year-old girl who never woke up after she was anethetised for an operation to remove her tonsils.

‘The physicians are in our custody,’ said Md Emdadul Haque, the officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Model police station, adding that the detention followed the filing of a complaint by the ill-fated parents of the victim, identified as Raha Moni.

The police were waiting for the parents to return after laying their daughter to rest to formally complete the procedure of filing a case against the doctors-Tanmoy Kaur and Sudipta Saha, who is a government physician from Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.

Tanmoy was the surgeon, while Sudipta administered anesthesia to the child. The operation was conducted at Life Care Hospital.

Raha died about an hour after the operation due to wrong treatment, the child’s family members claimed. Raha was the only daughter of Nizamul Haque and Tania Akter, a couple from Hatubhanga of Raipura upazila.

Nizam said that the doctors had assured him of Raha regaining consciousness within 15 minutes, but it never happened.

Raha was taken into the operating theatre again. Nizam entered the operating room after sometime later, sensing that something had gone wrong, and found her daughter’s body cold.

The doctors had allegedly tried to mislead the family, advising Raha’s immediate shift to Dhaka for ICU support. Raha’s father claimed that his daughter had already died.

The aggrieved relatives of the victim assaulted the two doctors and confined them inside the hospital until police had gone there to detain the doctors.

Life Care Hospital authorities claimed that the girl’s condition started deteriorating after the operation, prompting them to refer the child to Dhaka. But the child died before being shifted.

Sudipta later claimed that the surgery was successful and that they made every effort to save the child.

Raha’s family said that Raha had been suffering from tonsil problems for a month and was prescribed the surgery by Tanmoy.
