An angry mob beat up a dismissed police sub-inspector in Rajshahi city on Saturday night, allegedly for harassing people by framing them in false cases.

The victim, Mahbub Hasan, 35, was attached to the Detective Branch of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police before his dismissal from the job in the beginning of this year.

Witnesses said that some local residents caught Mahbub at Hozor Mor area at around 11:00pm and thrashed him.

Jamaat-e-Islami city unit organising secretary Jasim Uddin Sarker and former Islami Chhatra Shibir city president Khairul Islam were, among others, calmed the mob later.

Addressing locals, Jasim alleged that Hasan framed countless BNP and Jamaat activists in false narcotics and arms cases, tortured detainees, and extorted money by threatening them with ‘crossfire’.

Hasan, who studied at Rajshahi University, joined the police in 2013 and was posted at Motihar police station before being transferred to the Detective Branch in 2016.

Residents and victims claimed that his entry into the force was influenced by his past involvement in Bangladesh Chhatra League politics, and that he acted with impunity against political opponents and general people.

At the time several people spoke about their alleged harassment in the hands of Hasan during his police job.

Masud Rana of Rajshahi Railgate area said that he filed a case after July uprising in 2024 in which Hasan was accused of abducting his son Rajib Ali Ratul in 2019 and demanded Tk 5 lakh ransom by threatening ‘crossfire’.

Hasan later falsely implicated Ratul in a narcotics case in which he spent 16 months in jail, Masud Rana added.

Chandrima police officer-in-charge Mehedi Masud said that injured Hasan was admitted to hospital and later handed over to the Boalia police.

Boalia police officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said that they had an extortion case against Hasan involving threats of crossfire.

‘He will be produced before the court. If other allegations are substantiated, he will be arrested,’ he added.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police spokesperson Gaziur Rahman confirmed that Hasan was last posted at DB before being dismissed from service.
