Several hundred residents of Bongao and Birulia unions under Savar upazila staged a demonstration on Sunday protesting at the Election Commission’s move to include the unions in the Dhaka-2 constituency area.
They formed a human chain at Boliarpur bus stand and demanded that Bongao and Birulia should be kept under the Dhaka-19 constituency as they were in the past elections.
Addressing the rally, Dhaka district Juba Dal general secretary Mohammad Ayub Khan said that the move would increase public suffering.Â
‘We were always part of Dhaka-19 constituency in the past, and we want to remain under the constituency in the future’, he added.
The protesters warned that if their demand was not accepted, they would begin a tough movement by blocking the Dhaka–Aricha Highway.Â
They alleged that merging the unions with Dhaka-2 would cause hardship for nearly six lakh people.
They urged the chief election commissioner and the government to cancel the move to keep the unions under the Dhaka-19 constituency.
