A gang of armed robbers allegedly posing as members of the Detective Branch of police looted cash and jewellery from a house at Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka on Saturday night, leaving the neighbourhood in shock and fear.

According to victim family members, 10 to 12 men identifying themselves as DB police entered their third-floor flat at Alamnagar Sugandha Housing Society at about midnight.

The intruders held the family hostage at gunpoint, tied them up and assaulted them before confining them to a room.

The robbers then broke open an almirah and made off with about six bhori of gold, 12 bhori of silver and Tk 45,000 in cash, said Nasir Uddin, a resident of the house.

After the gang fled, the victims raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to rush in and rescue them.

Police from the Savar model police station later visited the scene. Panic has spread through the area following the incident.

However, the police station’s officer-in-charge Jewel Miah told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the matter was under investigation.

‘The situation is not fully clear yet. The statements from the victims appeared inconsistent, so we are closely examining the case,’ he added.
