The final voter list for the upcoming Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union and hall union elections has drawn widespread criticism as the names of deceased, expelled, dropout, and migrated students were found on the list.
According to the final voter list published on the university website, the list contains 11,919 eligible voters, including 6,102 males and 5,817 females, from 21 residential halls.
However, questions were raised over the credibility of the process for preparing and publishing the list.
The list includes the name of Abu Nur Mohammad, a resident of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall, who died of lung disease on May 30 this year.
At least four expelled Chhatra League leaders, punished for attacks during the July mass uprising in 2024, were also listed as voters.
They include the names of permanently expelled students Md Rizwan Rashed and Md Tamim Hossain, as well as two others expelled for two years.
The list also contains the names of students who dropped out or left the country, such as Rayhan Sharif of Maulana Bhashani Hall and Naimul Islam of Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall.
The name of a graduate, Sumaiya Zaman of Sufia Kamal Hall, who had already moved abroad, was found on the list.
The inconsistencies have sparked anger among student groups.
‘If the voter list itself is flawed, how can we expect a fair election?’ asked Akramul Haque of the JU unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
Chhatra Union leader Tanjim Ahmed called the list ‘shameful’.
Member secretary of the JUCSU election commission and university proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam said that the list could be corrected until August 28.
The JUCSU and hall union polls are scheduled for September 11.
The last JUCSU election was held in 1992.
