The body of a youth, who went missing following a ferry-trawler collision on the Rupsha River on Thursday night, was recovered on Saturday morning.

The deceased was Akash, 22, son of Dilip Sarkar of Sahapara village under Rupsha in Khulna.

The police said that people of the area spotted a floating body around 11:30am near Bamonpara village under Batiaghata and informed the authorities.

The body was later retrieved and sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue.

‘After being alerted by people of the area, we recovered the body and confirmed his identity,’ said sub-inspector Shimul Ghosh of Rupsha river police outpost.

The accident took place around 10:30pm on Thursday when a passenger trawler heading towards Sener Bazar pontoon collided head-on with a ferry amid stormy weather on the Rupsha River.

Three passengers fell into the river during the collision. Two of them were rescued immediately, while Akash went missing, police said.

Following the incident, Rupsha and Khulna Sadar river police, along with fire service, navy and coast guard personnel, carried out a two-day search operation before the body was eventually recovered by the people of the area.
