A Rajshahi court on Sunday placed three men, including the owner of a local coaching centre, on a five-day remand in a case filed over the recovery of arms, explosives and drugs from their procession in a raid on Saturday.

Judge Mamunur Rashid of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court passed the order after police produced the three before the court seeking a seven-day remand for each, said public prosecutor Ali Ashraf Zaman.

The accused are Montaserul Alam alias Onindo, an English teacher and owner of the coaching centre named Doctor English, located at Kadirganj area in Rajshahi city, and his associates Md Robin and Md Faisal.

Onindo is the son of Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Rajshahi metropolitan unit former vice-president Shafiul Alam Latku and a cousin of former Rajshahi city mayor and Awami League presidium member AHM Khairuzzaman Liton.

He was earlier arrested in connection with the Holey Artisan Bakery attack in Dhaka, and Rajshahi University slain Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique’s murder, but got released later as his name was not included in the charge sheets in either of the cases.

Earlier on Saturday morning, members of Bangladesh Army’s 40 East Bengal (Mechanised) Battalion conducted a raid at the coaching centre — Doctor English — and recovered a large cache of firearms and raw materials for making explosives.

After the army members held and handed over the trio accused to the Boalia Model Police, the police station’s sub-inspector Rezaul Karim filed a case against them under the Arms Act, the Explosives Substances Act, and the Narcotics Control Act on Saturday midnight.
