
The National Fisheries Week 2025 will begin across the country on August 18, with the aim of enhancing fisheries resources, ensuring sustainable development and raising public awareness about conservation.
This year’s theme is ‘building sanctuaries makes the country rich with local fish.
The inaugural ceremony will take place at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Dhaka on August 18.
Chief adviser Muhammad Yunus will attend as chief guest at the ceremony, which will be presided over by fisheries and livestock Adviser Farida Akhter. At the inaugural function, 16 individuals and organisations will receive the ‘Matshya Padak-2025’ in recognition of their contributions to the fisheries sector.
This year’s observance also includes a special tribute to the martyrs and injured in the 2024 July uprising.
To mark the occasion, a series of events will be held countrywide throughout the week, including rallies, seminars, technology exhibitions, discussions, cultural events and documentary screenings.
At the district and upazila levels, additional activities such as prize distribution to successful fisheries entrepreneurs, fish release events, workshops, safe aquaculture campaigns, quiz and drawing competitions and sports programmes with local fishermen will take place to engage communities across the country.
