The authorities on Tuesday imposed a ban on public entry to the T-groin, popularly known as T-bandh, along the River Padma in Rajshahi city as the river water continued rising.

The T-shaped groin was built in the Padma river as Rajshahi city protection embankment and it is one of the popular tourist spots in the area.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board issued the ban after the rising river water flooded low-lying areas in the city and the district.

The Padma was flowing 0.59 metres below the danger level at the T-bandh point at 6:00pm on Tuesday, according to gauge reader Enamul Haque.

Rajshahi WDB executive engineer Arifur Rahman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that heavy rainfall in India and the opening of most of the gates of the Farakka Barrage had caused the river’s water level to swell.

‘For public safety, entry to the T-bandh area has been prohibited. The ban is being enforced jointly by the Water Development Board and the Tourist Police,’ he said.

The swelling river has already inundated many low-lying areas in the river basins of Rajshahi and neighbouring Chapainawabganj districts.

In Rajshahi city, several areas, including Talaimari, Kazla, Panchabati, Pathanpara, Lalon Shah Muktamancha and Srirampur, have been flooded, forcing many residents to leave their homes.

Large parts of Char Khidirpur and Khanpur, along the Indian border, have gone under water, while the mid-river island of Middle Char is now completely submerged. Many displaced residents have taken shelter along the embankment in Rajshahi city with their livestock.

In Chapainawabganj district, floodwaters have marooned about 8,000 families in Shibganj and Chapainawabganj sadar upazilas.

Shibganj upazila nirbahi officer Azahar Ali said that about 7,500 people in Paka, Ujirpur and Durlavpur unions had been marooned, while Chapainawabganj sadar UNO Nurul Islam said that about 500–700 families in Narayanpur and Alatuli unions were stranded and facing losses.

Both the officials said that relief was being distributed to the affected families through their respective union parishads.
