Three people were killed in mob attacks in Sylhet and Sirajganj on Tuesday and Monday.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Correspondent in Sylhet reported that a man was beaten to death on suspicion of being a thief at a tea garden at Gowainghat in Sylhet on Tuesday.


The deceased, Imam Uddin, 38, was a resident of Medigram village in the upazila, said the police.

People of the area said that the employees of Jaflong Tea Garden confined Imam Uddin at around 3:00am and later took him to an office room adjacent to the tea garden bungalow.

They beat him severely to death, they alleged.

Being spread the news of the killing, people of the area got angry and started protesting at the incident in front of the main gate of the tea garden.

Gowainghat police station officer-in-charge Sarker Mohammad Tofayel told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they recovered the body from the office room next to the bungalow in Jaflong Tea Garden.

The police also detained three employees of the tea garden, Akkel Pradhan, Litan Ahmed and Niranjan Goala, for their suspected involvement in torturing the victim to death, he said.

The OC also said that the body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. ‘The detained wil be produced before the district judicial magistrate court on Wednesday after filing a case in this regard.’

The United News of Bangladesh reported that two men were killed in a mob attack in Sirajganj’s Sadar early Monday, after being accused of stealing cattle.

One of the deceased was Abdur Razzak, 40, from Paikpara village under sadar upazila while the identity of the second victim has yet to be confirmed.

According to police, the incident took place near the Panchthakuri area of the Jamuna River.

Acting on a 999 emergency call on Sunday night, law enforcement recovered one body floating in the river and another injured individual in critical condition. The latter was taken to Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Inspector Ahsanuzzaman of Sirajganj Sadar police station said that the bodies were currently being kept at the hospital morgue.

Md Rafikul Islam, officer-in-Charge of Sirajganj river police station, said that three cows—two belonging to Abdul Mannan and one to Azizul Haque, both from Shonapcha village in the char area of Bogura—were allegedly stolen on Sunday night.

While being transported by boat, the suspects were intercepted and beaten by a mob, leading to their deaths.

The police have arrested two thieves in connection with the incident and recovered a boat and the cows, though one of the animals died, the OC said.

The thieves were Faruk, 40, from Rangachuria village in Tangail, and Vikram Sheikh, 47, from Charia Kandapara village under Sirajganj Sadar.

A case has been filed with the Sariakandi police station in Bogura.

Meanwhile, a separate case of murder has been lodged with Sirajganj Sadar police Station, naming more than 100 unidentified individuals as accused. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
