At least 10 people, including a boy and an adolescent, were injured on Tuesday in Dhaka city when a fire broke out from the explosion of a gas balloon during the celebration of the first anniversary of the July uprising on Manik Mia Avenue.

None of the 10 people were seriously injured and were released after primary treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said the police and hospital officials.


The fire originated at about 2:30pm on the day during the cultural affairs ministry’s ‘July 36’ celebrations.

The incident happened hours before the interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus was expected to announce the July Declaration. 

On the day, the nation through many events celebrated the first anniversary of the overthrow of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime on August 5 past year, spearheaded by a student-led mass uprising, leading her to flee to India. 

National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery resident surgeon Shawon Bin Rahman said that they gave treatment for minor burns to 10 people on Tuesday.

‘No one was admitted to the institute. They were discharged after primary treatment,’ he added.

According to hospital officials, the injured were Mazharul Islam, 10, Mohammad Mihat, 17, Billal Hossain, 45, Mohamamd Mansur Islam, 38, Fazal, 20, Sharif, 32, Palash, 21, Mohamamd Habibullah, 23, Mohammad Yamin, 25, and Mishu, 23.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Division deputy commissioner Md Ibne Mizan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident originated from gas balloons explosion during the celebrations.

The injured were sent immediately to the institute through an ambulance, a Bangladesh Shiplakala Academy official said.
