The heads of five reform commissions on Saturday jointly called on the chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus to incorporate their reform proposals into the July Charter.
In a joint letter submitted to the Chief Adviser’s Office on Saturday, they expressed hope that Yunus would take appropriate and timely measures to ensure this, said a press release.
The signatories are Labour Reform Commission chief Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed, Women’s Reform Commission chief Shireen Pervin Huq, Local Government Reform Commission chief Tofail Ahmed, head of the Health Sector Reform Commission national professor AK Azad Khan and Media Reform Commission chief Kamal Ahmed.
The government formed these five reform commissions in second phase.
While the National Consensus Commission dialogue with political parties on the recommendations of the six thematic commissions formed in the first phase is undoubtedly timely and significant, the reforms proposed by the second-phase commissions are equally crucial for institutionalising democracy and building a new Bangladesh, the five commission chief said.
Despite time constraints, the interim government should take at least two immediate steps to secure political parties’ commitments to these essential reforms, they said.
They asked the government for selecting their reform proposals and to begin implementing those that could be carried out right away.
They also called for incorporation of the proposed reforms into the July Charter to ensure that the next elected government continued their implementation.
If reforms concerning the media, women, labour, health, and local government are not included in the July Charter, political parties might later dismiss or ignore them, which could also create a negative perception among the public, they warned.
