Participants, including academics, rights activists, cultural activists and labour leaders at a programme said that protests like Droho Jatra would continue until the abolition of the fascist structure of the state and oppression.

They made the vow at a programme titled Droho Jatra-2025 at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka marking the first anniversary of the protest programme originally held on July 2 during the student uprising in 2024 that ousted the Awami League regime on August 5.

The programme comprised of cultural performances, a rally and a procession.

Addressing the rally, former Jahangirnagar University professor Anu Muhammad said that the interim government could not came out of the old fascist structures and breached the trust of the people.

‘Droho Jatra will continue if the government continue to do such activities,’ said Anu Muhammad.

He said that he was observing a reflection of Sheikh Hasina-led government on the interim government.

Anu criticised the government for signing agreements with foreign countries going against the national interests, its move to lease out the Chattogram port to a foreign company without tender.

He urged the government to refrain from signing any agreement against national interests and unveil all such agreements signed during the AL-regime.

University Teachers’ Network leader and Dhaka University professor Samina Luthfa said that participants of Droho Jatra and the July uprising were not from a particular group rather people from all walks of life joined those protesting against repression and demanding justice for the massacre.

The recognition of those protesters is yet to be made, she said.

Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Abdullah Al Kafi Ratan said that workers sacrificed much during the uprising but repression against them began immediately after the uprising.

He made the statement referring to the law enforcers’ attacks on ready-made garments workers and repression on battery run rickshaw pullers.

After the rally and cultural performances, a procession was brought out and marched to Shahbagh.
