Forty-six people injured in the July 21 Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crash were still undergoing treatment at three hospitals in the capital Dhaka, with four of them in critical condition till Sunday night.

The fighter jet crashed into a building of Milestone School and College in the capital’s Uttara, killing 33 people, mostly primary-level students, and injuring scores of others.

On the day, two patients, including one student, were released from the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

The death toll previously was 35, but the health and family welfare ministry on Sunday revised the death toll twice — initially to 34 and later to 33.

No one among the casualties remained unidentified or missing.

According to the health ministry’s updates shared at 9:00pm on Sunday about the deceased and injured victims of the jet crash, 34 were undergoing treatment at the burn institute, 11 at the Combined Military Hospital and one is currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital.

The burn institute’s resident surgeon (emergency), Shawon Bin Rahman, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Sunday evening that out of the 36 patients undergoing treatment at the institute, four were in critical condition.

Among the four critical patients in the intensive care unit, one is in very critical condition, he mentioned.

Shawon said that Kazi Amzad Sayed, 20, a student, and Sabuja Begum, 40, a Milestone school attendant, were released from the institute on the day.

Sayed was one of the rescuers who got injured during the rescue operation, he added.

On Sunday, the health ministry shared revised updates twice at 10:00am and 4:00pm about the deceased and injured victims of the jet crash.

According to the 10:00am update, 34 died and 48 were undergoing treatment in different hospitals. Of them, 17 victims died and 36 were undergoing treatment at the burn institute, 14 died and 11 undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital, one each died at Dhaka Medical College, Lubana General Hospital and Cardiac Center and United Hospital Limited and one was undergoing treatment at the mental health institute.

After the first revision, the ministry in a post on its official Facebook page explained the reason for excluding one death from the toll.

Quoting the CMH sources, the post said that on July 21 the CMH mortuary received 15 bags of bodies, out of which, the Turag thana police primary inquest found 11 bodies, two partial bodies and remains of five bodies.

Following identification of the bodies by the families, the police handed over eight bodies same day and one body on July 22.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Department DNA laboratory collected a total of 11 DNA samples from the unidentified bodies and body parts on July 22 and then identities of five bodies were detected on July 24 through DNA tests.

On the same day, the bodies were handed over to families.

Earlier the CMH authorities had reported 15 deaths, including six unidentified victims. Following the DNA test the number of deaths in the CMH was reduced to 14.

Sunday’s 4:00pm update showed that 33 died and 46 were undergoing treatment at different hospitals, with 17 victims died and 34 undergoing treatment at the burn institute, 14 died and 11 undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital, one each died at Dhaka Medical College and United Hospital Limited and one currently undergoing treatment at the mental health institute.

In the second update on the day, the ministry said that the unidentified deceased at Lubana Hospital and the deceased patient at United Hospital was confirmed to be the same individual.

Revising that, the death toll has come down to 33 from 34, it said.

According to Milestone authorities, 26 are schoolchildren, three guardians, two schoolteachers, and one school attendant among the 32 deceased.

On July 21, the pilot was killed in the crash.

Milestone is scheduled to remain closed till today and a decision would be made soon whether the institution would open tomorrow.

A delegation of 21 physicians and nurses from Singapore, China and India met with chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday at the state guest house, Jamuna, said a press release issued by the CA’s press wing.

During the meeting, Yunus expressed his gratitude for the rapid response and medical support extended by the countries’ healthcare professionals who were currently in Dhaka to provide specialised healthcare services to the jet crash victims.

Saturday night, the chief adviser visited the burn institute to inquire about the treatment of the injured.
