The police on Friday arrested three individuals for their alleged involvement in the mugging of a journalist’s mobile phone and money in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.

The arrestees are Yusuf, 26, Siam, 23, and Zohurul, 22, said a press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Friday.

It said that the journalist’s mobile phone was recovered from the arrestees.

Meanwhile, four police officers of Mohammadpur police station were withdrawn for their alleged misconduct and negligence in discharging duties following the incident, said Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner for Mohammadpur zone.

‘They are sub-inspector Jasim Uddin, assistant sub-inspector Anarul and constables Majedur Rahman and Md Nurunnabi,’ added the police official.

Just a three-minute walk from Mohammadpur police station, a journalist named Ahmad Wadud was attacked with a machete and mugged at about 11:00pm on Thursday.

The journalist subsequently shared a post on social media detailing both the mugging and the misconduct he faced at the police station.

The post quickly went viral, sparking widespread criticism regarding the role of the police.

‘The muggers suddenly attacked me and snatched my mobile phone and wallet containing some money. My wife, who was nearby but not immediately beside him, was unharmed,’ he said in the post.

The victim immediately went to the police station and reported the incident to the officer-in-charge Ali Iftekhar Hasan.

Upon hearing the details, the OC allegedly misbehaved with him.

He also alleged that, instead of receiving support, he faced rude behavior from the police.

OC Iftekhar could not be reached for comments over the phone even after several attempts on Friday.Â
