Politicians, academics and professionals at a discussion on Friday said that unity among political parties was needed for the implementation of the spirit of any people’s uprising.
The Samajtantrik Buddhijibi Sangha, an association of socialist intellectuals, organised the discussion on ‘Unsotturer Ganaobbhutthan: Janamuktir Prashno’, a 1969 mass movement-based book authored by Dhaka University emeritus professor Serajul Islam Choudhury, at the Ganashasthya Nagar Hospital auditorium in the capital Dhaka.
Serajul Islam, also a public intellectual, gave the introductory speech at the event.
He said that during the 1969 mass movement the then political forces in the country were not united.
The situation in terms of unity among the country’s political forces is worse after the 2024 mass uprising, he said.
He hoped that the political parties would remain united for implementing the spirit of July uprising.
Former Jahangirnagar University economics professor Anu Muhammad in his keynote speech said that in the 1969 mass movement, students, workers and farmers had played a significant role.
He said that unity among the components of mass movement was important for its success, but it failed as divisions emerged among the forces.
The young generation who led the July uprising should know about the history of past uprisings in the country, Anu added.
Politician M Enamul Haque, professional and cultural leader Kamal Uddin Ahmed and professional Shafiqul Islam, among others, took part in the discussion.
Poets Hasan Fakri and Munir Eusuf recited their poems at the programme.
